DVPN/Phactory Work Day 2

Work day two was another success! We moved more piles of refuse, but still had time for touring the site, dreaming, and discussions of the future. We have an extremely long way to go, but each time I touch the project, I am more convinced than the last time that this is going to all come together with time and persistence!

Have you guys picked out what plants you're going to put in the gardens yet? I was thinking an all-native pollinator garden would be awesome. I'd be happy to come up with a list of plants if that would be helpful.

We have definitely not finalized any of this, yet. We're too busy clearing the space right now. We'd love to have you involved in the project, though: you should contact [info]laughing_fox (raffaella@dvpn.org) if you want to be involved in that aspect of the planning.

Cool, I'll do that. I figured since I'm not really available to come up for the work days, I could at least help out by putting my knowledge to use.

Thanks! That really would be awesome!!

Wow. That's amazing. I wish I lived closer. What has changed since you last were there, what has the city been doing to help?

In two visits, all we've done is partially cleared out the courtyard. Right now, the city isn't even involved in the process. One of the things we need are other organizations to take an interest in the project, too. If we can build a coalition of small nonprofits -- particularly arts-oriented nonprofits -- who are dedicated to carving out some sweat equity in this space, we stand a much better chance of getting the city's attention.

Why would the city help? :P

You should ask me those sorts of things directly.

The city will be helpful through various programs they have. I've already signed up for some graffitti removal assistance (and I think they actually did it, partially) through the anti-graffitti program, and there are also paint voucher programs.

There are also programs to loan out/give away clean up supplies, brooms, bags, etc. through another office.

I've talked to many people in the city/state/etc. government, but it's a matter of figuring out how they can help, what resources are available, and how to access them.

I try to do as much networking and research as I can towards making the right connections, but for every way the city helps, there is another way that they will be more of a headache.. so it's a mixed bag.

Sorry- I thought the city was supposed to be fixing something for you, so I am confused.

She doesn't even know who you are, Michael. There's no reason she would ask you the question directly.

Bob, meet my sister, Robin...

Robin, meet Bob..

:P

LOL!! That's pretty funny.

Is this a coincidence of some kind, or is there a connection I don't know about? How is your sister on my friends list, when you just added yourself today?

I have no idea why you might have friended her. She's a very active pagan organizer in chicago, so maybe that had something to do with it. Heck, you had friended me a long time ago, due to I think some sort of arts or organizing thing I was doing and posting about in the local philly lj communities.

She was also potentially going to move back to the area a little while ago with her hubby who might have gotten a chemistry research or teaching job in wilmington or something, but it never came through. At that time I had told her to check out DVPN but I still don't know why you might have friended her.

OK. It was the possible job and move. I remember the initial conversation, now.

Still funny. Small planet. It would look bigger if we tidied up a bit, though... ;-D
